Custom Bull Health Testing for Semen Export

Elgin Breeding Service, Inc. has been an active member of both the NAAB and CSS for over 25 years. Since joining, EBS staff have been members of various NAAB Committees including: Custom Freezing, Technical and Foreign Marketing. Currently, EBS President, Brad Cardwell, is a CSS Board Member. NAAB and CSS membership has given EBS great insight and assistance in keeping EBS in the forefront of the custom Semen Industry.

NAAB
The purpose of the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) as defined by its By-Laws is “…to unite those individuals and organizations engaged in the artificial insemination of cattle and other livestock into an affiliated federation operating under self-imposed standards of performance and to conduct and promote the mutual interest and ideals of its members.” This excerpt portrays the scope and purpose of NAAB, a non-profit organization, established in 1946.

NAAB provides several genetic programs, including the Cross Reference Program the issuance of Stud Codes, the issuance of Marketing Codes, the Calving Ease Sire Summary, the Random Blood Typing Program, the Genetic Defect Record and the funding of Dairy Records in Progress.
NAAB holds events on a regular basis including the NAAB Biennial Technical Conference on Artificial Insemination and Reproduction, the NAAB Annual Convention, and from time to time a Dairy Genetics Workshop and a Beef Symposium.
Of most importance to you the producer, is the guidance the NAAB gives member facilities. This would include a surprise yearly on site audit which addresses: sire housing and health, record keeping, identification, cleanliness as well as the laboratories ability to manage semen quality control.

CSS
Certified Semen Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of NAAB. Formed in 1976, CSS is an objective auditing service developed by responsible AI industry leaders through NAAB. CSS provides industry self-regulation in the areas of semen and sire health and identification.
The sire health programs set forth by CSS are the foundation from which disease free semen is produced. CSS guidelines address: sire health testing and interval, antibiotic treatment of semen, sire housing and isolation, and of course ongoing work to insure the U.S. semen industry remains a world leader in sire and semen health.

CSS certification for a bull’s semen inventory is at first glance a complicated procedure. However, it is based on sound health science and is proven day in and day out around the world. The testing protocol is only a part of the program. The bull is physically housed in accordance of his testing status and is moved to new housing with each advance in status. The program also calls for a specific mixture of antibiotic treatment of the semen as well as the distinctive CSS logo being printed on each qualified straw of semen. This logo is recognized worldwide as representing disease free frozen semen.

CSS Testing Protocol:

Pre-entry Testing:
All bulls and mount animals that are intended to enter a CSS facility must be healthy and disease free. Pre-entry testing must be completed prior to the animal’s arrival, or be housed in a pre-entry housing facility where the required tests are completed. Animals that require CSS semen will remain in pre-entry isolation until pre-entry testing is complete and results are negative.
 Pre-entry Tests:
  1) Physical exam
2) Tuberculosis (TB)
  3) Bovine Brucellosis (Bangs)
  4) Bovine Leptospirosis (L. Pomona, L. hardjo, L. canicola, L. ictero and L. grippo)
  5) Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV).

CSS Isolation Testing
:  All bulls and mount animals will be held in CSS Isolation facilities until they successfully complete the isolation protocol before being moved into CSS Resident Herd facilities. Semen can be collected, but not released until all CSS testing is complete.
CSS Isolation Tests:
  1) Tuberculosis (TB) – one negative test conducted at least 60 days after the pre entry TB test.
  2) Bovine Brucellosis (Bangs) – no sooner than 30 days after the pre-entry test.
  3) Bovine Leptospirosis – no sooner than 30 days after the pre-entry test.
  4) Bovine Campylobacteriosis (Vibrio) – bulls and mount animals are placed on a schedule according to age:

6) Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) – all bulls and mount animals must be tested for viremia and persistent BVDV infection while in isolation with negative results prior to entering the CSS Resident Herd facility.

Resident Herd
Once a bull or mount animal has completed all isolation testing with negative result, he may then move to the Resident Herd. The following tests must be conducted at 6 month intervals:
  1) Tuberculosis (TB)
  2) Bovine Brucellosis (Bangs)
  3) Bovine Leptospirosis (L. Pomona, L. hardjo, L. canicola, L. ictero and L. grippo)
4) Bovine Campylobacteriosis (Vibrio)
  5) Bovine Venereal Trichomoniasis (Trich)

NOTE: It is important to understand that the CSS list of disease consists of diseases that are known to be transmitted through semen. While many countries require that semen being imported from the U.S. be CSS Certified, they will also likely include many other tests in their protocols.

Domestic Semen Shipping / Semen Export Coordination

Semen Shipping
When it comes to semen shipments, we are well experienced. From overnighting semen to preparing an export, we can do it all.

Exports
Semen that is shipping out of the country starts at semen collection. When you bring a bull for collection and let us know his semen is to be exported, we take all the necessary steps to ensure that his health testing is correctly completed for a shipment in the future. When you have an order to be exported, we will gather all the appropriate documents and begin the process of getting it ready. When everything is in order, we will have the tank sealed and it will be ready for the freight forwarder. Any questions about export shipments can be answered by our Export Shipping Coordinator, Missy McMurtray.

We offer shipping insurance, in an amount you feel necesary. This service is not required, but always available. We can ship to you as fast as overnight, as long as it is a weekday. We request that you give us as much notice about needing a shipment as possible, as during peak times, our shippers can be reserved up to 2 weeks in advance. Large shipments or just a few straws can be at your ranch at your convenience with just a phone call.
